Almost as memorable as the game itself, the Super Bowl commercials are a crowd favorite year after year. This year was no exception for auto maker commercials. With big budgets, comes big responsibility. When you are competing against not only other car brands, but the infamous Bud Knight, it can be hard to stay relevant.
The top auto commercial contenders for Super Bowl LIII were Jeep, Hyundai, Toyota, and Audi.
Hyundai: The Elevator
This fan favorite commercial puts the company’s Hyundai Shopper Assurance at the forefront while slyly placing Hyundai’s all-new flagship SUV, the 2020 Hyundai Palisade in there too. Jason Bateman delivers a hilariously deadpan performance throughout the commercial as passengers enter and exit the elevator. The couple entering the elevator tell Bateman that they are looking for a new car. Before taking them to their floor, Bateman takes the previous passengers to their designated floors: “Jury Duty”, “Middle Airplane Seat”, and the now infamous “Vegan Dinner Party”.
Hyundai chose to highlight their Hyundai Shopper Assurance because its car shopping made better. With Hyundai Shopper Assurance you will not only save time while you shop for your next vehicle, but you will shop confidently with Hyundai’s transparent pricing structure, flexible test driving, streamlined purchasing, and three-day worry-free exchange.
With well over 34 million views on YouTube, the Hyundai: The Elevator commercial was definitely a crowd favorite during Super Bowl LIII.

Toyota: Toni
With a feel-good message, the Japanese auto maker is not afraid to shake things up with Antoinette “Toni” Harris at the center of their Super Bowl commercial. Toni is the first female non-kicker football player on a college roster list. Toni can be seen driving the redesigned RAV 4 throughout the commercial which is all about shattering norms and expectations. The new RAV 4 gets a facelift inside and out with its sporty, muscular exterior and thoughtfully engineered interior.
This commercial is a stand out with its message of individuality and norm breaking and is definitely a Super Bowl commercial worth remembering.
Toyota Supra: Wizard
Not only did Toyota have one really good commercial during the Super Bowl LIII commercial line-up this year, but they added in another one highlighting the triumphant return of the 2020 Toyota Supra. Viewers can see the Toyota Supra sliding around a pinball machine-like track while The Who’s “Pinball Wizard” is being played in the background. This was a great commercial as it is in keeping with the fun, youthful spirit of Toyota’s most recent commercials like the “Let’s Go Places: Tag”. In the colorful, upbeat “Tag” commercial viewers see the new lineup of Toyota vehicles playing a rousing game of tag because the fun never ends when you are in a Toyota!
Audi e-tron GT: Cashew
A memorable commercial with its main character walking towards a house in the middle of a field Gladiator-style, Audi delivers a powerful message about the future of its brand, and a car that will be released this year. In the commercial the main character greets his grandfather who takes him to the barn where an Audi e-tron GT is waiting to be unveiled. With some dramatic camera shots, lights, and background music, this Audi commercial will keep you entertained. The auto maker shows off the e-tron GT’s sharp lines, and the fact that it is in fact an electric sports car ready to hit the market this year.
At the very end of the commercial Audi reveals to the world that one third of Audi’s products will be electric by 2025. Now that is a both a lofty goal that we can all hope other brands will follow suit.
Jeep: Gladiator is Back
An American icon by itself, Jeep delivers the return of a cult favorite, the Jeep Gladiator. In the commercial we see an older Gladiator put in a car crusher. Right before we think the era of the Jeep Gladiator has been demolished, the car fights back against the crusher to then transform into the all-new Jeep Gladiator, effectively destroying the car crusher.
The Jeep Gladiator certainly does not apologize for its boxy Jeep-ness and this commercial certainly shows off the return of this fighter well.
